Villanova is notorious for its spectacular men’s basketball team.
As for notoriety of the school’s men’s tennis team? Well, the Bearcats squashed that notion.
The Binghamton men’s tennis team defeated the Wildcats, 6-1, Saturday, sweeping the singles matches in straight sets. The Bearcats, however, went 1-3 in doubles matches.
“I expected us to play better in singles than doubles,” said head coach Adam Cohen. “We played two new doubles teams, so I kind of knew it would be difficult.”
The singles matches highlighted junior Moshe Levy, who placed a 7-6, 6-4 win at first singles, and freshman Gilbert Wong, who posted a 6-0 win.
There were two new additions to the Bearcat team, Alexandre Haggai and Rafael Rodrigues, both of whom won their singles matches. Haggai went 6-0, 6-0 in fifth singles and Rodrigues went 6-2, 6-3 in sixth.
For Cohen, his goals are still the same from the winter season: to get better with every practice and every match.
“We always tell the guys to improve as individuals and as a team,” he said. “The training isn’t so much different [in the spring]. Right now, doubles is what we need to work on. In tennis, one point means a lot, and we are trying to get every one we can.”
The Bearcats will head up to New Hampshire this weekend to face Dartmouth and UNC Greensboro.
“I’m looking for a great season,” Cohen said.
