Despite not having a full lineup and playing on the road, the Binghamton men’s tennis team had no problems this weekend.
In their first dual match of the season, the Bearcats easily defeated Siena 7-0, winning all six singles matches and the doubles point in straight sets.
The Bearcats were without freshmen Moshe Levy and Pierre Clavel, who were given the weekend off. Their replacements, freshmen Reina Kohtake and David Schneider, won at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-4 and at No. 6 singles 6-1, 7-5, respectively.
“[Levy and Clavel] will play the regional, so I decided to give them the weekend off,” said head coach Adam Cohen. “Reina and David looked good. It was a good experience for both of them.”
Junior captain Faisal Mohamed continued his dominance this season, improving his record to 7-0 at No. 1 singles as he won 6-1, 6-3. Junior Alex Dobrin, who had been dealing with soreness early in the season, seemed just fine physically as he won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1.
“Finally after weeks I feel back to full strength,” Dobrin said. “I hate being out. It’s terrible just watching.”
“I think Alex is fine,” Cohen said. “He didn’t complain about any soreness or aches after the match.”
Junior Jon Bonnet won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and freshman Justin Salkin won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Binghamton will next compete in the ITA East Regional, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, on Oct. 19. Cohen submitted his roster and a committee at some point this week will accept what players will be invited.
“We will continue to practice and keep working hard,” Cohen said. “Hopefully some guys will get in and do well in the qualifying and main draw and build some confidence toward[] the spring season.”
“This is what the fall season is all about,” Mohamed said, referring to the regional. “We have to keep doing it so we get respect and get better teams wanting to play us. We are all playing well right now as a team.”
