The men’s tennis team seems to have found its stroke.

Binghamton was victorious in both its matches over the weekend, defeating St. Bonaventure 6-1 at home Saturday before beating Colgate on the road 5-2 the following day.

“I feel we are riding the momentum wave at the moment,” said head coach Michael Starke. “We feel united as a team.”

The weekend started off at the Binghamton Tennis Center where the Bearcats (7-4) cruised past St. Bonaventure (2-7). Seniors Brian O’Connor and Edwin Gerard clinched the doubles point by battling back from a 5-3 deficit to win their match 9-7.

“They save their best tennis towards the last half of the match,” Starke said.

BU then managed to win five of the six singles matches. The only loss came at No. 1 singles, where senior Richemn Mourad was defeated 6-0, 7-5. But junior Aurielo Martinez got his first victory of the year at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-4.

“I was injured, but I am playing good and got my confidence up,” Martinez said.

Every win is important for the Bearcats, who are trying to retain a regional ranking, so they couldn’t lose their focus for Sunday’s match at Colgate.

Once again, the doubles point came down to the first doubles team, and once again O’Connor and Gerard managed to fight off match point before taking control, this time 9-8 (3).

“For some reason we start off slow,” O’Connor said. “Both me and him are good under pressure and we’ve been able to come back and pull off the match.”

After winning the doubles point, the Bearcats lost their momentum. Mourad fell at No. 1 singles and sophomore Alex Dobrin lost at No. 2, as Colgate took a 2-1 lead. Martinez evened things up with a win at the fourth spot, but O’Connor and Gerard both dropped their first sets and things were looking grim.

“Faisal [Mohamed] came on the court and lifted our spirits and confidence,” Starke said. “Once he arrived on the court, we had hope again.”

Mohamed shouted encouragements to his teammates during their matches, and it seemed to work as O’Connor, who was down 0-3 in the second set, won six straight games and the third set 7-6 (8). Mohamed then clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

“As soon as I got on the court, I was like ‘Brian, let’s do it’ and we fed off each other,” Mohamed said. “If none of us were screaming, we would have lost.”

The team stepped up big, especially in tough conditions. The playing surface was anything but ideal and the crowd was out of control.

“The crowd was ridiculous,” Mohamed added. “We all stepped it up.”

The victory at Colgate marked Binghamton’s last match of the indoor season. The Bearcats will have two weeks off before they play at Stetson, where they lost 6-1 last year.

“This weekend was really good for our team,” O’Connor said. “After a bunch of close wins, we rely on each other and work together. Everyone’s going back to where we should be.”
