In most matches, it’s about the team result, but this past weekend it was all about the individual numbers.
Three players from the Binghamton men’s tennis team competed at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional, hosted by Penn this past weekend.
After losing his first match to Justin Chow of Columbia, 6-3, 6-2, junior Faisal Mohamed came back strong in the consolation bracket, winning three straight matches. He first defeated Chris Innes of Colgate, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Then down a set, Mohamed did not give up and was able to triumph over Michael Kalfayan of Harvard, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 11-9. In the third round, Mohamed easily won, 6-4, 6-2, defeating Youssef Fassi-Fehri of America East foe Stony Brook.
In the consolation semifinals against Boston College’s Thomas Nolan, Mohamed was down 5-2 in the first set when he was forced to withdraw with an ankle injury.
Freshmen Moshe Levy and Pierre Clavel also lost their opening matches, but came back to each win a match in the consolation draw. Levy defeated Ryan Lloyd of Lehigh, 6-4, 6-2, before losing to Nolan. Clavel battled and came up victorious against Harvard’s Dan Nguyen, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 16-14, before losing to Jason Sechrist of Boston College.
In doubles, Mohamed and Clavel came back to win 9-7, after trailing 5-1 to a team from Stony Brook in the first round. They were defeated in the second round, 8-1, by Georgetown’s doubles team.
The Bearcats will end their fall season at the Cornell Fall Invitational this weekend.
