There was no southern hospitality waiting for the Binghamton men’s soccer team in Florida this weekend, where the Bearcats tied Florida International on Friday, 2-2, and fell to Florida Atlantic on Sunday, 1-0 in overtime.

Friday’s game was played in scorching weather that forced Binghamton to alter its game plan. Things already were not going as planned when the team’s regular goalie, junior Ryan Bertoni, was forced to play the field, a move necessitated by injury to senior midfielder Ibrahim Yusuf. In addition, sophomore midfielder Cody Germain, who scored two goals against Long Island last weekend, was also not available to play.

Despite the thinned roster, and playing a man down after sophomore back Barry Neville was red carded at the 57:42 mark, the Bearcats (1-4-2) held a 2-1 advantage over FIU (1-2-2) with 3:56 remaining. Then, after a throw-in by the Golden Panthers, FIU sophomore forward Levi Coleman netted the tying goal off of a cross from freshman defender Sina Ebrahimi to send the game to overtime where neither team would score.

Despite coming away with a tie, Binghamton head coach Paul Marco questioned the legality of the throw-in that led to the tying goal.

“From where I was sitting it didn’t really look like a legal throw-in,” Marco said. “On watching the tape it’s difficult to tell, [the referee] could have easily said ‘Hey, that’s not a legal throw-in, take it again,’ or given it to us.”

Neville and senior Peter Sgueglia accounted for the Bearcats’ scoring, both capitalizing on penalty kicks; Neville’s shot opened the scoring at the 13:41 mark, and Sgueglia’s goal at 49:57 gave Binghamton the lead, exactly two and a half minutes after Golden Panther junior Dadi Kristj√É.√°nsson had tied the game at one.

Red shirt freshman Jason Stenta, who was needed to start as goalie in place of Bertoni, recorded 4 saves for the game. FIU outshot Binghamton 19-6 on the day.

On Sunday, in the finale of Binghamton’s Florida tour, the Bearcats fell to FAU (2-3-0), the second consecutive victory for the Owls. Sophomore forward Javier Carillo scored the game-winning goal for Florida Atlantic on a header, 4:13 into overtime. Senior defender Ran Poliker setup the winner with a cross from outside the penalty box.

The Bearcats actually outshot the Owls 9-6 on the day — 8-1 in the second half — but freshman FAU goalie Phillip LaMarre’s five saves kept BU off the board. Stenta recorded three saves for Binghamton.

Binghamton now returns home with a lowly 1-4-2 record, and even with consideration to injuries, time is running out for the team to put it together.

“We have some individuals right now who are underperforming,” Marco said. “A couple of them have maybe even gotten a little complacent with who they are within the team — they’re not as hungry to win. That’s the difference right now between us being pretty good and where we are right now in our record. Because we’re a pretty good team, but we’re not getting the results in the past we would make sure that we got.”
