Professor to speak on Irish hunger striker
Sociology Professor Denis O’Hearn will speak on his new book, “Nothing but an Unfinished Song: Bobby Sands, the Hunger Striker Who Ignited a Generation,” on April 26 at 8 p.m. in Lecture Hall 7. Sands is a world-reknowned activist who died in 1981 after a 66-day hunger strike to protest the conditions in Northern Ireland’s prisons. The event is being sponsored by the Irish Student Union.
Day of Silence
The Rainbow Pride Union invites all students to participate in the National Day of Silence on Wednesday April 26. The day, during which participants refrain from speaking, was created to highlight the discrimination which members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community say they face daily. The silence will be broken by a free concert in the Dickinson Amphitheatre at 6 p.m.
Karate master to give demonstration
Hidy Ochiai, a world-renowned karate master, will host the 40th annual Washin-ryu karate tournament in the Binghamton University West Gym on Saturday April 29. The competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. and Ochiai will perform his legendary sword demonstration at noon. Entrance fees are $15 for adults, $10 for children between 7 and 12 years old and free for children under 7.
Mayor applauds entrepreneurial students
Binghamton mayor Matthew T. Ryan applauded the efforts of My Campus Promotions, a student-run advertising company started by three BU management students. The group held a press conference with the mayor Monday at the Whole in the Wall restaurant in Binghamton’s South Side to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the city of Binghamton and the University.
Upcoming music department events
Cynthia Scott will perform with the Harpur Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Michael Carbone, on Thursday May 4 at 8 p.m. in the Osterhout Concert Theater. Tickets are $9 for the general public, $7 for faculty/staff/seniors and free for students. The Binghamton University Wind Ensemble will perform a concert entitled “The Legacy of Alfred Reed,” on Sunday May 7 at 3 p.m. in the Anderson Center Chamber Hall. The concert is free of charge.
