Leanne Musso tied Heather Grose’s record of 84 for the most Binghamton University women’s lacrosse goals all time with two goals in the Bearcats’ 23-9 season-ending loss at the Vermont Catamounts, Sunday in Burlington, Vt.
The Catamounts scored first and never looked back, leading by eight at the half. Musso’s record-tying goal came late in the first half, her second of the game, and put an end to a 6-0 Vermont run.
The loss extends the Bearcats’ (4-11, 0-6 AE) losing streak to three games. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Vermont (8-8, 5-1 AE).
Binghamton freshman Erica Hill scored two goals for the Bearcats, matching Musso for the team’s game-high. Freshmen scoring goals is nothing new for the Bearcats: Including the game against Vermont, where at least four freshmen have scored in 15 games this season.
Hill, Lisa Illig, Siobhan Menz, Kate Concialdi, Kate Tesi and Ali Castiglie were all freshmen who found the net against Vermont. Castiglie leads the team in points with 35, including 16 goals and 19 assists. Those 35 points put Castiglie into second place in Binghamton history for points by a freshman. Becky Green holds the title with 54, set in 2004.
Binghamton’s goalkeepers struggled against Vermont, as senior Sandra Alvarez was pulled only 13 1/2 minutes into the game. Freshman Lauren Scott took over, allowing one goal and recording 11 saves. Scott was kept busy as the Catamounts shot the ball 51 times total in the game, including 30 first-half shots.
Binghamton will have one more chance to break its single-season win total when the team visits the Wagner Seahawks on Tuesday at Staten Island. Musso will try to become Binghamton’s all-time leading goal scorer and coach Tony Zostant will try to end his first season on a positive note.
