Despite a valiant effort against fierce competition from James Madison, Old Dominion, and Bucknell, the Binghamton men’s and women’s swim teams both came up short this weekend as they both placed fourth in their meets at the Bucknell invitational.
For the men, sophomore Kaan Tayla won the 100-meter freestyle in 44.00 seconds, meeting the NCAA “B” provisional mark of 44.65. That time also beat the school record of 44.46 seconds in the event, which Tayla set himself last year.
“As a whole, I think the team did very well at the meet,” Tayla said. “We all swam times faster than what we were doing at this time last year. The endurance of the team was reflected by the consistently good performances at the demanding invitational.”
The men’s relay team of Tayla, Brian Koizim, Trevor Stone and David Holmes was victorious in the 400-meter free relay, posting a time of 3:04.05.
For the women, freshman Aleksandra Grubic placed second in the 100-meter freestyle posting a time of 53.20 seconds, and freshman Katherine Hassfurter placed third in the three-meter board dive.
“Overall we had great a competition,” said head coach Patrice Back said in a statement after the meet. “The teams were extremely supportive of each other. It was a great invitational for us. It makes us look forward to the conference championship.”
The Bearcats are off until a dual meet at Cornell on Nov. 30.
