With the Jets finally coming up with a win this week, Pipe Dream figured it would be a good time to hand out some grades for the team this season:
Quarterback: (Grade ‘ C+/C)
From this point on, the Jets are Kellen Clemens’ team. He’s going to have (and has had) his share of ‘rookie’ mistakes, but his ability to create plays with his arm and his feet give fans hope for the future of this organization.
Running Backs: (Grade ‘ C)
Until Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers had gone nearly two years without allowing a rusher to go over the century mark. Thomas Jones changed that with his 117-yard day. Makes you wonder where this type of performance was the majority of the season and if he can continue to replicate it.
Wide Receivers: (Grade ‘ B-/C+)
The way this unit has been catching balls in key situations lately, you’d think they were being coached by Justin McCareins. Add in the fact that Laveranues Coles, an offensive captain, is recovering from a concussion and suffered an ankle injury last Sunday, and the pressure to step up moves onto Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith.
Tight Ends: (Grade ‘ B+)
Over the past few weeks Clemens has started to learn what most of us have already known: give the ball to Chris Baker and you’ll do just fine. Jason Pociask and Joe Kowalewski have also made cameo appearances in the Jets passing game, with the latter scoring his first career touchdown last week against the Washington Redskins.
Offensive Line: (Grade ‘ C-)
Make no doubt about it, this unit is still a work in progress. The pass blocking is respectable, but when it comes to the running game, there’s nothing to be desired. Still, with the season now being one of rebuilding, there’s no better time than the present to improve.
Defensive Line: (Grade ‘ C-)
Believe it or not, this unit had five sacks against the Steelers this week. To compare, in the previous nine weeks combined, they had just three. Here’s hoping this week was more of trend than a mirage.
Linebackers: (Grade ‘ C+)
‘Roughly 70 percent of the earth is covered by water, the rest is covered by David Harris.’ That’s right, I’ve started quoting David Harris facts. He’s a beast. The middle linebacker has averaged more than 17 tackles a game since starting for the injured Jonathan Vilma three games ago. Victor Hobson and Bryan Thomas should take notes.
Defensive Backs: (Grade ‘ C-/D+)
Abram Elam is the new David Barrett. By that I mean Elam is a guy who week after week makes a dumb game-changing decision, yet is not removed from the starting lineup because of the lack of depth at his position (safety). Kerry Rhodes and Darrelle Revis try their best to show that this unit is not all bad.
Special Teams: (Grade ‘ A-)
Don’t kick to Leon Washington. You would think opposing teams would stress this more often, but the Jets’ version of Devin Hester always makes plays when he gets the ball. He is only one kickoff touchdown away from tying the NFL record for most in a season at that position (four by Travis Williams and Cecil Turner).
Coaching: (Grade ‘ D+)
You can only hope that the game plan Eric Mangini used against the Steelers on Sunday is only the beginning of his post-bye strategy. He’s starting to run the ball more often, as well as create pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Now if only he could make the team play all 60 minutes with regularity ‘ the Jets have been outscored 154-71 in the second half of games.
