Through the joint efforts of the Career Development Center (CDC) and pre-law advising, Binghamton University will host its annual Law Day this Wednesday in the Events Center.
Starting at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 2:45 p.m., Law Day will feature approximately 80 American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law schools that will share information and answer students’ questions about their institutions.
To help students get to the event, an Off Campus College Transport Blue Bus shuttle will be running from the University Union to the West Gym between 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pre-law adviser John Appelbaum said that Law Day is a great opportunity to ask law schools specific questions about their programs, and the event has continuously been a great success.
Appelbaum advises students interested in going to law school to attend Law Day for a variety of reasons. One primary benefit to students is that the law school representatives are usually admissions advisers that review applications.
“It’s good for Binghamton and for prospective law students because it puts you face-to-face with admissions and nothing compares to that,” Applebaum said. “I’m a huge believer in events like this.”
Law Day has been running at BU for close to 25 years, said Holly Horn, assistant director of the CDC.
According to Appelbaum, unlike the Graduate School Fair or Career and Internship Fair at BU, Law Day is more informal, with no reason to wear a suit and a tie.
“This is not about you getting hired, it’s about getting information,” Appelbaum said.
Horn agreed that the event is less formal than the Career and Internship Fair.
Although it is less formal, students should not show up in sweatpants and a ripped shirt, she said.
Appelbaum also recommended that students leave their resumes at home. As stated previously, this event is about getting information, and not admissions.
Directly following Law Day, there will be a Law School Admissions Panel in the Tau Alpha Upsilon Bearcat room, also in the Events Center.
At the panel, speakers from the law schools will discuss admissions, financial aid and student life. Students will then have the opportunity to ask the panel questions.
Appelbaum will be moderating the panel discussion.
The CDC has a list of the law schools that will be present at BU through a link off of the ‘Programs and Events’ tab on their Web site, cdc.binghamton.edu.
