The Giants won the Super Bowl!
As a devoted fan of the G-Men since I was 10, I have never had a better Sunday than I did this weekend. However, Sunday wasn’t just great because Big Blue won. It was great because I drove home to surprise my dad and watch the game with him. We always watched the Super Bowl together and I was not about to watch our favorite team play with history on the line without him on the couch next to me.
We piled our plates with chips and dip, made huge heroes and filled our cups with soda like we do every year, but it was during my 3 1/2-hour drive back to Binghamton the next morning that I realized that’s why the Super Bowl is so popular.
Millions of the game’s spectators aren’t interested in the teams playing or even football for that matter, and yet it is the most-watched sporting event on television. And when even my girlfriend, who is (to say it nicely) not an avid football fan, takes time out of her day to sit with a couple of her friends, eat little game-time appetizers and watch the Giants upset the Patriots’ dreams of perfection, then it is obvious the Super Bowl must have something going for it.
The Super Bowl itself almost takes a back-burner to the traditions involved in watching the game. For example, a bunch of my friends aren’t Giants or Patriots fans, but they still threw a huge party for the game. I’m pretty sure most of them just wanted to throw the party so they could gorge themselves with wings, chips, Italian heroes and drinks. They also invited every girl they knew to stop by and hang out, but all in all they just had a great time eating, drinking, laughing, talking, etc. and that’s what was important to them. It’s obvious that sitting down and just having fun with a bunch of people you care about is what the Super Bowl is all about.
That being said, the Super Bowl is here in Binghamton almost every day of the week. There are countless Binghamton teams competing for that top spot in the division and they need your help. Come out to watch the games even if you don’t even fully understand the sport. You can even take the Super Bowl routine and let the game play second fiddle to just hanging out with your friends at the games. No one at the game is going to stop you from laughing, talking and eating with a bunch of people you enjoy spending time with.
Actually, there might be some people who would like you to cheer for the Bearcats every once and a while but that’s a small price to pay for the good time you’ll have at the game.
