The Binghamton University women’s tennis team proved that its artillery was a force to be reckoned with as the Bearcats held Seton Hall and Army at bay over the weekend.

The Bearcats notched a 6-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday. Bearcat freshman Jillian Santos came away with a win at first singles over Pirates’ Elizabeth Verow, 6-4, 6-4, and later joined forces with sophomore Yulia Smirnova to defeat Verow and Denise Liebschner, 8-2, at first doubles.

Bearcat sophomore Lauren Bates defeated Liebschner in second singles, 6-3, 6-2, but lost in a team-up with junior Danyelle Shapiro at third doubles, 8-6.

West Point continued to show favor to the Bearcats, as the team rallied to defeat Army the next day, 4-3.

The match got off to a slow start as Binghamton dropped its doubles point. The only win was notched by Shapiro and Bates, who defeated Sarah Giles-Madden and Bridie Burke of Army, 8-5.

Things turned around for the better during the singles matches as Smirnova took out Black Knight Caitlin Finnegan, 7-6, 6-3. Freshman Basak Gone followed similar suit, defeating Annie Hang, 6-3, 7-5, at fifth singles, while Shapiro notched a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Audrey Hansen at sixth singles.

With Army clinching both the first and second singles, it would be BU freshman Marina Bykovskaya who would make the set that won the entire match. Bykovskaya lost the first set of her match against Charlee Warford, 6-7, only to follow through with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the last two sets.

“This was a good win for our program,” said BU head coach Mike Stevens, according to a Binghamton University press release. “Army is always a very strong and talented team, so this is a good step in the right direction for us.”

The Bearcats take on Cornell on Feb. 20, at 5 p.m.
