The Binghamton University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams faced off against defending America East champions UMBC in a dual meet this past weekend. The men were defeated by a score of 170-127 and the women by a score of 172-125 at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in the West Gym.
The men were strong in the diving portion, with Matt Russo winning in the 3-meter board and Ryan Graham winning the 1-meter board. Also, senior Joe Rogan captured the 50-free while junior Brenno Varanda was impressive in the 200-IM.
The 400-free relay team ended the meet on a positive note, led by Rogan, junior Brian Koralewski, junior Sean Lorenz and freshman Jason Chen. The men won the relay in a time of 3:13.85.
The women’s team improved off their meet against Boston, once again led by their younger swimmers. Freshman Lyndsi Worthington was a dual-event winner, and Kelsey Anderson and Brittany Detlef turned in strong runner-up finishes. Worthington leads the Bearcats with three individual wins and finished the 100-back with the fourth-fastest time in school history (1:01.84).
The women also saw an impressive performance by junior Kate Hassfurter on the boards. Hassfurter captured top honors in both the 3- and 1-meter boards.
The Retrievers came into the meet as the conference favorites, looking to match their championship season last year. The Bearcats will hope to capture their first meet as they take on UMass on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the West Gym. UMass, which is the Atlantic-10 defending champion, is Binghamton head coach Sean Clark’s alma mater as he was also the lead assistant coach from 2000-2003.
