Water Polo

Club water polo, fresh off a tournament at Millersville University last weekend, is gearing up for a trip down to Virginia for the UVA Invitational. Last weekend saw the Bearcats in competition against the University of Delaware Blue Hens as well as the Millersville Marauders in a tournament cut short, like many others, due to poor weather conditions on Sunday.

Water polo found itself part of a high-scoring battle with Delaware, losing 14-13. A flurry of goals for Binghamton came from the club president, junior David Bohr, as well as starting wing Nicholas Drohan. The game against Millersville was doomed by a slow start, as Binghamton fell behind 9-0 at the end of the first quarter and never got close. The final was 17-7 loss.

Now I know what you’re thinking ‘

‘Wait ‘ Binghamton has a water polo team?’

‘What the hell even is water polo in the first place?’

Both good questions and ones which I had myself as a freshman when first learning about the game. Water polo is a rarity here on the east coast, but the best way to describe it is as a blend of soccer and swimming. Teams of six players and a goalie play against one another for 28 minutes, split up into four quarters, in the hopes of outscoring their opponents by the end of the match.

If you have any experience swimming or playing soccer in the past or if you are further interested in water polo in general, I highly suggest stopping by the East Gym pool on Monday and Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. or Fridays at 4 p.m. and expressing your interest. From personal experience, being not only a current member of water polo but also someone who came to the team with absolutely no knowledge of the game, the experiences, the fun that you will have, the people you will meet and the places you will see will be some of the best of your stay here at Binghamton University.
