Field Hockey Oct. 28: The Binghamton club field hockey team braved intense wind, horizontal snow and freezing rain in Cortland this weekend, but looked calm and collected as they dispatched the Cortland Red Dragons 5-0. Team captain Nicole Keane did an excellent job motivating the team and directing the game strategy.
“We started off the season a little bit rocky because not everyone was very committed to the club and it was kind of hard to play as a unit when people weren’t showing up to practice,” Keane said. “But as the season has progressed we’ve all started to play together and really work as one.”
Center midfielders Shailesh Khadapkar and Dominic Young dribbled the ball into C-State territory to set up early scores for the Bearcats. Left winger Colleen Cheverko played offense for the first time and proved she was up to the challenge, scoring on an assist from Young and setting up right midfielder Jillian Cotugno and left midfielder Melissa Cuan for goals, finishing the game with one goal and two assists. It was her first career goal and she seems poised to continue to fill the stat book.
The Bearcats also shined on the defensive side. Defender Jeanette Rebecchi made an amazing stick save on a corner shot in the first half and the defense held C-State to just 10 shots on goal. Goalie Catherine Sullivan made four saves for the shutout. Cortland is a strong team with years of experience, and they use their turf field as an advantage against teams like BU that are used to playing on grass. BU fell to Cortland last season in a tournament at Buffalo, so coming back to win this one was a huge success for the team.
This weekend is the final tournament of the semester, as the Bearcats will travel to Syracuse to play in the first round. If they win they will have to travel the next day to the finals in Buffalo.
Ice Hockey Oct. 21: The Binghamton club ice hockey team traveled to Princeton, N.J., to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last Saturday looking to extend its winning streak to two games. The Bearcats had a slow start and Rutgers controlled the first period, outshooting BU 22-5. Luckily, freshman goalie Colin Rosenbaum, making his first start for the Bearcats, was up to the task early, allowing only one goal in the first period. The Bearcats played a much better second period and tied the score at one, when Tom Kitay had a beautiful deflection off a Bryan Coughlin shot from the point. Rutgers rallied, however, and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. The Scarlet Knights followed the second period with an even stronger third period and went on to score two more goals. The Bearcats had many opportunities, but were unable to capitalize and fell 4-2. The club will travel on Saturday, Nov. 4 to face the Big Red of Cornell University at 2 p.m.
Ultimate Frisbee Oct. 20-22: The ultimate Frisbee club went to Edinboro, Pa., to take part in a very competitive tournament hosted by Edinboro University. The team was shorthanded, as only nine players traveled to the tournament, but despite the handicap the team shined. The Bearcats entered the tournament ranked 19th in the 20 team field, though it became clear early on that the ranking was undeserved. The team won their first three games easily with scores of 13-4, 13-2 and 13-2. Saturday’s final game saw a tired BU team win 13-7, despite showing signs of fatigue. The team’s undefeated record allowed them to join the “elite” bracket. With the new rankings in place, BU was ranked 11th, the highest of any team from the weaker bracket. Though, in facing No. 6 Rochester, the team started off slow by falling behind 5-0 early. The team called a time-out to catch its breath and came out with new life, but it was too little too late. The Bearcats fell 11-7, ending the tournament prematurely. Despite the loss the team held its head high, since they proved those who ranked them 19th wrong.
Women’s Rugby Oct. 21: The BU women’s rugby club headed to Cornell University for the first round of the New York State rugby playoffs. The weather held out for a day of no rain, although numerous puddles on the field made playing difficult. The team put up a good fight, but it was not enough to down Cornell, the No. 1 team in the state. Despite the loss, the girls are very proud of their performance throughout the entire season. The team has an upcoming tournament in November that they will place two teams in.
Men’s Soccer Oct. 22: The Binghamton men’s soccer club traveled to Syracuse last week, and worked the Orange to a 2-2 tie. It was a cold and rainy day, and the field conditions made for a tough game. Most of the pitch was torn up and covered in mud. Despite the conditions, the Bearcats got off to a quick start when Teddy Levarda headed a corner kick from Matt Powers into the net. J.J. Gould scored a goal to put the Bearcats up 2-0., though, this lead would not last. Despite a solid effort from the defense, Syracuse put on constant effort and scored two late goals to earn the tie. It was a good lesson for the squad, who vow to toughen up and protect their leads more.
