I remember first hearing Jack Johnson way back in the day in the G. Love song “Rodeo Clowns.” I loved that song then, and for that nostalgic reason, I am happy that Jack Johnson is experiencing a great deal of success today.
His latest album, “Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film ‘Curious George,’” is a wonderfully catchy collection of acoustic songs. It serves as the film’s narration and it successfully expresses the innocence of being a child, without alienating adults. Some may find the songs to be too “cutesy,” but one must keep in mind this album’s lyrics are supposed to represent the thoughts of an inquisitive primate. It’s not exactly a high concept, but it works, and the album gels together perfectly.
Longtime fans will be pleased to see Jack stick to his distinctive style. He features a few friends on the album: Matt Costa, G. Love and Ben Harper. On shitty, cold Binghamton days, this album is perfect to remind you of childhood memories and warmer climes, so long as your blinds are closed.
