The BU women’s tennis team wrapped up its most successful season ever with back-to-back wins this weekend against conference rivals Albany and Stony Brook.
On Saturday, the Bearcats swept Albany, 7-0, on Senior Day for Zeynep Altinay and Lya Kushnirovich, the program’s all-time top two winningest players. The team then defeated Stony Brook by a 5-2 count on Sunday afternoon at SBU’s Senior Day, during their school’s ‘Rivalry Weekend.’
‘It’s been four years, but I felt like I got 10 years’ life experience in this place,’ said Altinay, the program’s all-time wins leader, with a smile. ‘It’s bittersweet ‘ I’m both happy and sad.’
Kushnirovich, whose singles win total of 84 is second only to Altinay’s 86, went undefeated over the two-day stretch for the Bearcats (14-2, 4-0 AE), who will likely garner their third-straight No. 2 seed for the America East tournament to be held at Yale this weekend.
Sophomore Nicole Scarangella and freshmen Danyelle Shapiro and Erica Rosenblum each also went undefeated for the weekend. The team will spend this week preparing for the season-ending tournament, which has been won by Boston University each of the last 13 years.
Despite being undefeated in America East play, the Bearcats enter this weekend’s tournament as a sure underdog against Lesley Sheehan’s Terriers, whose regular-season resume features a stellar 7-0 victory over No. 63 Dartmouth, a 4-3 road shocker over then-No. 26 Harvard, and a 7-0 obliteration of UMBC, Boston’s only AE conference match of the season.
By contrast, the Bearcats fought to a hard-earned 4-3 victory over the Retrievers, the likely No. 3 seed, on April 14.
‘Every year we step on the court with the same goals [to win the Championship],’ Altinay said. ‘We’d like to be the favorite [rather] than the challenger. We don’t want to be the challenger anymore ‘ we want to be the favorite.’
Statistically, the Bearcats leave little doubt as to who will challenge the Terriers on Sunday morning.
With these last two conference wins, the Bearcats improved to 36-8 (81.8 percent) against Albany all-time, with their last loss coming in 1998-99. Binghamton has now defeated Albany nine straight times, the last eight without dropping a single match. BU now also boasts a five-match winning streak against Stony Brook, not to mention a 9-0 all-time record against Hartford.
On Saturday, Bearcats fourth-year head coach Mike Stevens honored graduating seniors Altinay and Kusnirovich for their outstanding four-year careers, which featured a race for the record reminiscent of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa (without the performance-enhancing drugs, of course).
‘It’s very, very sad to see them leave,’ said sophomore Juliana Umeki, who plays no. 3 singles. ‘They kind of lead the team, and Lya’s my doubles partner, so we got closer, [and] Z was my doubles partner. It’s going to be very sad to see them leave.’
In addition to their singles triumphs, Altinay and Kushnirovich, who were once doubles partners, are tied for the all-time doubles wins record with 70. Altinay was the BU Female Athlete of the Year, the Pipe Dream Athlete of the Year and the America East Player of the Year, all in 2004-05, while Kushnirovich garnered Team MVP honors last season.
The senior day ceremony was the first for the Bearcats since April 2004, when Janine Sadaka was honored before a 7-0 Bearcat victory over Hartford.
Fellow senior Jelena Koprivica, who played an integral part of the Bearcats’ runs to the championship match each of the last two seasons, left the team last week for personal reasons. Koprivica, who underwent surgery in the fall, never returned to the lineup this season, despite her 43-14 two-year record, mostly at third singles.
The seedings for the America East Tournament at Yale will be announced Wednesday.
