More than 111 businesses and companies from across the country are coming to Binghamton University this week to recruit students at this year’s Job and Internship Fair.

The Career Development Center is holding the Fair tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Events Center.

Nancy Paul, director of the CDC, said that the Fair is a great opportunity for all students, no matter what type of career they’re looking into.

“One of the points we want students to know [about the Job Fair] is that 25 percent of these employers are looking for students of any major,” Paul said. “The employers really range from the type of organizations, corporations, government groups and non-profit organizations they are recruiting for.”

Attending a career fair can be overwhelming for many students, especially since the event is being held in the Events Center for the first time. In the past, the day was hosted in the Old Union Hall and the Mandela Room of the Old University Union, which are both unavailable this semester because of construction.

According to Paul, students should organize a plan of who they want to talk to and when before attending the fair.

The CDC has created a fair booklet, floor plan and list of recruiting companies that students can use as a guide in preparation for the event.

“Before going into the event, students should look the list over and go in organized with an A-list and B-list,” Paul said. “They should know which employers they really want to talk to and do a little research about them first to use the time they have with the employer wisely.”

According to Paul, thousands of companies are invited to the career fair each year, in addition to the same sorts of events at other competing universities. These businesses then make the decision of which schools to attend based on their recruitment plans.

“The fact that 111 employers are coming in this kind of economy is excellent and it says a lot for [BU’s] reputation out there,” she added.

Although the statistics are not available, organizers can assume that the employers returning to the career fair each year are recruiting a good number of BU students to justify their return, Eileen Bauer-Hagerbaumer, coordinator of the Job and Internship Fair for the CDC, explained.

“A lot of times resumes are collected by the businesses and students are encouraged to apply through e-recruiting. Based on their application, businesses will decide who they want to recruit,” Bauer-Hagerbaumer said. “The [recruiters] do remember you; that is their job. It’s really important that the student makes a good impression.”

The CDC is providing a shuttle through Off Campus College Transport from Downtown and around campus to the Events Center for the day.
