Last time I checked, I was waist-deep in student loans so that I could have professors teach me about the classes I signed up for. BUSI clearly states that I am enrolled in ‘Mundane Humanities Course 101,’ so when did that evolve into ‘My Views on National Politics 101”?

I can recall numerous examples of when discussion of marginal productivity digressed into why George W. Bush is the devil incarnate. One of my professors even posted a photo on his slides of Mr. Bush next to a chimp with the caption, ‘Same IQ?’ streaked across the bottom in huge red letters. A class about mitosis became a political tirade.

Involvement in politics is a big deal. It is unfortunate that so many college students are passive about our ever-controversial national political scene, and it is admirable to encourage students to become involved. However, there is and there is not a time, place and method to spread political fervor. Lecture Hall is not a stage for your political ideas. You are not paying me to sit and listen to you rant about what is currently pissing you off ‘ I am paying you to teach me about whatever it is you specialize in ‘ so do it!

As much as we college students hate to admit to it, we have very impressionable minds. I am sure you would love to have your own political army, and, sure, you are entitled to your opinion, but do not force it upon anyone. You are not the pope; you are not infallible. Understand that your opinion is just that ‘ an opinion.

If I want a liberal or right-wing spin on an issue, I will be sure to consult with CNN, the New York Times or Fox News. From there I will form my own opinion. After all, isn’t college about giving us the tools to think independently and draw our own conclusions?

If you are filled with such political angst, volunteer on a campaign, be a guest speaker at a meeting of a college political group or even write a blog. There are avenues designed to allow for political expression, and if you are as passionate as you claim to be, then you will not mind taking the time to find them.

See, my job is to write opinion columns, so that is what I do ‘ express my opinion. You are a teacher of (insert subject here). Your job is to teach, so I’d appreciate if you could stick to it!

‘ Erica Fritz is a senior psychology and pre-med major. If you’re her politically-minded professor and you’re reading this, please don’t fail her.
