The Binghamton softball team went into Cornell and put on an absolute hitting display in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Facing the much higher-ranked Big Red, Binghamton saw senior third baseman Mia Bieman go yard twice and the lineup racked up 14 hits over the course of the two games.

Binghamton ended up splitting the series Wednesday, losing the opening game 7-6, but then finished off the midweek non-conference series strong with a 7-5 victory.

Cyrilla Suker picked up her team-leading fifth win in game two, striking out nine over the 10 1/3 innings and pitching in both games. She once again played the stopper for pitcher Jessica Whitaker, who had a rough outing in game one, giving up seven earned runs off eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

The Bearcats were then swept in a doubleheader by host Colgate 8-0, 8-2 on Thursday.

The Bearcats will host the Maine Black Bears this weekend for the last two regular season games. It will also be the Bearcats’ Senior Weekend.

Maine (22-25, 7-10 AE) is in seventh place in the eight-team America East. The Black Bears are out of the playoffs even if they win out, since Stony Brook and Hartford hold the tiebreakers.

Maine’s Alexis Souhlaris is fifth in the AE with a .367 batting average, and Ashley Waters is right behind her at sixth at .355. The Black Bears are fifth in the conference with a .281 batting average, 75 points ahead of the last place Bearcats. Waters also leads the AE in hits.

The big weakness for the Black Bears has been pitching. The staff is seventh in the conference in ERA and its 4.39 average is lower only than Binghamton’s.

This weekend the Bearcats will say goodbye to senior outfielders Stephanie Woodcock and Emelie Palmcrantz, third baseman Sara Eppolito and catcher Mia Bieman. Eppolito is second on the team in batting average and leads the team in RBIs with 20, while Bieman leads BU in slugging percentage and home runs, and is also second in RBIs and third in batting average.

While the last four years have not been spectacular for the softball program, going just 41-110 from 2004 up to the end of the Cornell series, these players gave it their all throughout their time spent here at Binghamton.

Game time is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow and 11 a.m. on Sunday at the East Gym Complex.
