Reminder: Alternate side of the street parking

Alternate side of the street parking will begin at 5 p.m. on Thu. Dec. 1 and will remain in effect until Mar. 15. Binghamton’s program is called, “Park for Tomorrow.”

The basic principle is that by 5 p.m. every day, motorists should move their car to the opposite side of the street. At 5 p.m. motorists should park on the even-numbered address side of the street if the next day is an even-numbered date. On odd-numbered days motorists should park on the odd address side of the street.

The parking rule applies to all city streets, including those with parking on one side only. Streets with no parking zones on both sides remain no parking zones. The parking rules do not apply for metered parking.

Tickets for violations carry a $10 fine.

Broome County secures $17.1 million for capital projects

Broome County will receive payments amounting to $17.1 million from New York’s tobacco settlement agreement with participating cigarette manufacturers. Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala signed the official papers.

The county sold its remaining tobacco revenue stream to investors and received a portion of the money up front. Broome County exercised this action once before and used the proceeds to pay off debt, build a senior center and fix numerous roads and bridges.

“I would like to see the money spent on the rebuilding of our George Harvey Justice Building,” Fiala said. It is a historic building that has been empty for at least four years and could consolidate the county’s court functions.
