Calling all students to sue the government
The American Civil Liberties Union and the Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) joined to seek plaintiffs for a class action lawsuit against the government. A recent federal law has taken financial aid from almost 200,000 college students who have drug convictions. The purpose of the suit is to fight against “an unfair and irrational barrier to education,” according to the SSDP.
Summer Youth Musical Theater Workshop Auditions
Leonard Bernstein’s “Wonderful Town” will be presented this summer at Binghamton University by the Summer Musical Theater Workshop. Auditions are being held Friday, May 12, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are open to people from ages 12-18. If accepted, they will participate in a workshop from July 24 to Aug. 13.
Binghamton’s Legislative Branch Working to Send Sex Offenders Elsewhere
Upon recent investigation it has been noted that the New York State Department of Corrections continuously sends sex offenders to the city of Binghamton. Due to this, Binghamton now has more sex offenders per capita than any other city in New York. The city council is working against the issue and has sent legislation to the NYS Department of Corrections, Governor Pataki and several other high officials.
Binghamton University Tennis Player Named America East Player of the Week
Richemn Mourad, senior tennis player No. 1 from San Paulo, Brazil has been named America East Player of the Week. He won all matches during the week, allowing for the Bearcats’ five-game winning streak. He is 53-23 in his overall career.
Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) in Broome County to host two speakers
On behalf of the Crime Victims Assistance Center, the Department of Criminal Justice and the Violence Against Women Office, the SART in Broome County is bringing in both Joanne Archambault and Karen Carroll-Coleman to speak. The conference will be held at the Binghamton Regency Hotel at 1 Sabro Square from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1 and 2.
