Stony Brook’s campus may have been covered in almost two feet of snow, but Binghamton could find no way to cool off the Seawolves.

The Binghamton women’s basketball team fell at Stony Brook 68-53 Sunday after giving up 39 points in the first half. The Bearcats have now lost three of their last four games and are just 3-8 on the road.

“It was another tough performance on the road,” said BU head coach Rich Conover. “Stony Brook jumped out early and we couldn’t execute.”

Stony Brook took an early 18-9 lead, but the Bearcats rallied back to cut the deficit to three points with 4:22 left in the first half. The Seawolves then responded with an 11-0 run, going into halftime leading by 14.

“Offensively, we played very well early,” Conover said. “Defensively, we weren’t quick enough. We couldn’t put the offense and the defense together.”

Stony Brook cruised through the second half thanks to an opening 13-7 run, which put them ahead by 20. The Bearcats couldn’t cut the deficit to less than 15 points the rest of the way.

“I thought our defense did much better this time,” said Stony Brook head coach Maura McHugh. “We didn’t allow them to get as many open shots.”

Senior guard Jen Blues led the Bearcats with 14 points, giving her 965 in her career to surpass Alicia Koppenhoefer as the school’s ninth leading all-time scorer.

Senior forward Rachel Laws again saw limited playing time, scoring seven points in 14 minutes. Conover said she is still not at 100 percent but expects her to return to the starting lineup soon.

After not playing against New Hampshire, sophomore center Laine Kurpniece logged 18 minutes Sunday. Conover credited his team’s depth in the post as the reason why Kurpniece has been sidelined. Sophomore forward Juta Jahilo responded to the extra playing time well, scoring eight points and pulling down seven rebounds.

The loss drops the Bearcats into a fourth-place tie with UMBC in the America East. They will look to end their losing ways when Boston heads to the Events Center for the battle of the BU’s Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Boston is currently in third place, a half-game ahead of the Bearcats.

“This is a very important game,” Conover said. “We’re vying for position in the conference with Boston, and we definitely want to get a win at home.”
