It’s just another night in Binghamton. You find yourself bored and in search of something to occupy your time but you may feel as though your options are limited to bars and a night filled with drunken debacles. While it’s always good time, why not change it up this semester? You can break out of the mold and venture past the Downtown scene and experience something new.

Every week there is an assortment of events and activities that happen right on our very own campus. Some of the regular staples on campus include: Late Nite Binghamton; men’s and women’s basketball games; Harpur Film Society; and concerts held by the music department. These events are free or inexpensive for students.

On a grander scale, the school and student groups are offering some events sure to captivate the entire campus.

Foo Fighters Concert: The Foo Fighters will be playing right here at Binghamton University on Feb. 22 at 7:00 p.m. The SAPB, after struggling with a lack of funds, has finally given students what they asked for. With the opening bands, Against Me! and Serg Tankian, the lead singer of System of a Down, this show should be a memorable experience. Tickets are still available.

Relay for Life: On April 11, the annual Relay for Life will take place. A fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, this years Relay for Life is dedicated to former BU student, Chad Baltuck, who lost his life to cancer in 2007. Start your own team with a group of friends, or join a team. For more information on Relay for Life and how you can get involved, visit www.events.cancer.org/RFLbinghamtonuniversityNY or email burelay@gmail.com.

Spring Fling: As Binghamton begins to thaw and the sun makes an appearance, the students of BU get a chance to celebrate the new season with Spring Fling, an event to celebrate the school year coming to an end. Students are given a chance to listen to free live bands, go on rides, and check out some of the local vendors.

Downtown Binghamton

First Friday: The first Friday of every month gives students and the people of Binghamton a chance to hit the streets and check out some local art and music. This monthly event allows students to see what some of the local artists have to offer as well as a sober view of Downtown. BU’s Downtown Center has recently become a part of the First Friday event. This week at the University Downtown Center the late Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored. The event as well as the other First Friday activities will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Parade Day: Every year, the people of Binghamton and students get together to watch the St. Patrick’s Day parade make its way down Main Street. The annual parade is sponsored by the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. It will be held on Saturday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m.

The Arena: Not too far from the bars of Downtown Binghamton is the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Arena is the host for the Binghamton Senators games and other acts. On Feb. 5, the Harlem Globetrotters will be playing at the Arena. For more information about events at the Arena, visit broomearena.com or call (607) 778-6626.

The Forum: When you are looking for something to do this semester, you should look for what is happening at the Forum. This weekend the opera, ‘Carmen,’ will be performed there. For more information about the Forum, visit http://www.gobroomecounty.com/parks/ParksForum.php or call (607) 778-1369.

Magic City Music Hall: Make sure to check out Magic City Music Hall this semester for some live music. Magic City also has Honky Tonk Night (an evening filled with dancing, music, and riding the mechanical bull) every Friday. For more information visit http://www.magiccitymusichall.com.
