Although the Binghamton track and field squads had some outstanding individual performances at this weekend’s Heptagonal Outdoor Track and Field Meet, the men placed sixth out of seven teams and the women finished fifth out of eight.

Not too surprisingly, the men’s side was led by senior pole vaulting king Rory Quiller, who bested the runner-up by 4/10 of a meter. Although Quiller placing first at a meet is hardly news, it was significant for him to perform well after not having a top finish at his last two meets. He also broke his own Binghamton outdoors jump record on a leap of 17-6 1/2 that broke the Bucknell facility record. With his jump he again surpassed the required height for the regional meet. Ryan Van Halle failed to place this week after a breakout performance last week at Virginia.

The throwers also did well at Bucknell, showing a lot of potential for points later on in the season. Kevin Hall picked up a point in the shot put throw while Justin Halleck also picked up a point in the hammer throw. Ben Babcock just missed the points with a seventh place finish in the discus.

Jimmy Massar took another second place finish this week in the 200-meter dash, finishing one one-hundredth of a second behind the first place finisher from St. Francis. He was also part of the 4×100 men’s relay team, which placed second behind Penn State. The team of sophomores Massar, Dan Walker, Geoff Campbell and graduate student Adam Goldberg ran a time of 41.98 seconds, good enough for IC4A qualifying time. Walker also placed second in the 100-meter dash while Campbell placed fifth in the same event. Goldberg, who earned points in high jump and hurdles throughout the indoor season, placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

The women’s side reigned supreme in the relays. The team of Kim Williams, Keisha Short, Deahna Vinson and Jasmine Hinson dominated the 4×100 relay. They trounced the competition, finishing almost .3 seconds in front of second place and making the ECAC qualifying time by more than half a second. The 4×400 team also made noise, taking second place with the group at the 100, Hannah Wright replacing Hinson the only change. The team slid into the ECAC meet by running .01 seconds faster than the qualifying time.

Williams, a key factor in both relay teams, also put up a good effort in the individual events. Williams placed first in the 100-meter dash while qualifying for the ECAC meet in a third event. She was not the only relay team member to place, as Short placed fifth in the 200-meter.

The women also had two point earners in the 400-hurdles as Dayna Johnson placed third and Caitlyn Wright placed sixth.

In the pole vault, Carly Gross placed fifth and Katie Wilmer placed directly behind her in sixth. Marsha Feisenger tied for sixth place in the high jump with a jump of 1.58 meters.

The team travels down the road to Cornell this weekend.
