A four-game road trip to start the season, including a visit to nationally ranked Syracuse, makes it difficult to start a season off on the right foot. Binghamton’s women’s lacrosse team found that out this season, and finished its road stint with a loss to Siena this Wednesday, bringing its season record to 0-4.
‘We’ve prepared well and have been practicing hard; it’s just a problem of consistency,’ said freshman attack Tracy Weinstein. ‘We need to play consistent the entire 60 minutes, not just the beginning and end of the game.’
The Bearcats visited No. 12 Syracuse last Tuesday for a showdown at the Carrier Dome. Binghamton couldn’t keep up with the power of the Orange, who ran off the first half with an 8-2 run. Syracuse did not let up in the second half and ran away with the game, securing a 23-4 win.
The Bearcats were lead by Danielle Edwards, who netted two of the team’s four goals and recorded the only assist, generating a three-point performance for Binghamton. Senior Anna Riordan and freshman Kate Gromatsky added goals for BU. Sandra Alvarez made 18 saves off 41 shots on goal for BU.
Syracuse outshot Binghamton 55-13.
A trip to Hamden, Conn., to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats yielded another loss for the Bearcats this Saturday. A 9-2 deficit after the first half was more than Binghamton could overcome. The Bearcats’ second-half run came up short after Edwards, Erika Travis and Gromatsky of Binghamton each netted one, giving Binghamton three unanswered goals to get within four points. The Bobcats pulled away to take the victory 14-6. Gromatsky had one goal and one assist for the first multi-point game of her career.
The Bobcats outshot BU 31-15, and Alvarez registered 10 saves for the Bearcats. Kelly Bruneau had three goals and three assists for Quinnipiac.
The Bearcats then headed to Siena for the Saints’ home opener. The Bearcats were looking to come away with their first win of the season. They gained an early 6-4 advantage in the first half and looked to finish the half on top. The Saints had other things in mind as they used a 14-2 run through both halves to put the game out of reach, winning 18-11. Siena outshot BU 39-19.
Heather Grose and Julia Demuth had hat tricks for the Bearcats. Grose also added two assists. Only three Bearcat shots on goal did not find their way into the back of the net.
After playing their first four games in unfamiliar sites, the Bearcats finally hold their home opener this weekend. The team will look to get one in the winning column tonight, in the home opener against St. Francis at 7:30 p.m. at Binghamton’s Alumni Stadium.
