Freshman midfielder Brandon Corp turned Colgate into Bearcat heartbreakers, scoring the game-winning goal for the Red Raiders with just 6.8 seconds remaining in regulation two weekends ago.
The visiting No. 20 Red Raiders rallied from behind in the second half to overcome a four-goal deficit and defeat the Binghamton men’s lacrosse team 8-7. Corp’s heroic last-second shot gave Colgate its only lead of the day and, in the end, the only lead that mattered.
“At the end we had a defensive breakdown there; we lost [Corp] in the backside pipe, and instead of going OT we ended up in a loss,” said head coach Ed Stephenson. “Tough game, disappointing loss.”
Freshman attack Jake Boyce shined in Binghamton’s loss, opening up the scoring with three goals in less than four minutes spanning over the first two quarters. Boyce added two more goals later in the game, bringing his total to five on the day (four of which were unassisted), and the Bearcats held a 6-2 lead with 12:12 remaining in the third.
“They just weren’t sliding very quick, so I was able to take it to the goal, which is what I do well,” Boyce said.
It was a tale of two halves, however, as the Red Raiders battled back in the second, registering six of the game’s final seven goals. Senior midfielder Robert Trasolini netted the game-tying goal for Colgate with 5:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, after the Red Raiders had trailed the entire game.
The Bearcats’ offense fell silent, mustering only one goal in the face of Colgate’s comeback. Binghamton’s defense also fell short trying to stave off the Red Raiders, as senior goalie Kevin McKeown was removed in favor of sophomore Larry Kline after Colgate scored twice in the span of a minute at the start of the fourth quarter.
“We owned the first half, they owned the second half,” Stephenson said. “I thought we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the second half. They outhustled us a little bit in the second half getting to the ball. And then when we had some chances to get to the goal I don’t think we took the best shots we could have.”
