With a men’s lacrosse team dominated by young talent in the freshman and sophomore classes, Senior Day didn’t figure to be a senior-led affair.
But in their last career home game, the seniors proved that their leadership should not go overlooked.
Defender Tom Wilmot led the charge against the No. 6 Danes, causing several turnovers with stick checks and body checks. Wilmot also showed rare agility and speed for a big man, single-handedly taking two long clears to the offensive end.
Midfielder Jeff Santucci had scored only four goals all season, but on Saturday he scored two decisive goals, including the crucial insurance goal with 1:24 remaining.
Another player with a quiet season, midfielder Jeff Kaylor, provided a spark off the bench, notching two assists.
After rebounding from injury, attack Rob Williams returned to form and showed the team’s young attackmen how to dominate, netting three goals and one assist.
As for the freshmen and sophomores? They were happy that the seniors had an upset victory to remember.
‘I think it’s about time that we gave the seniors something to leave with,’ said sophomore Jake Boyce. ‘We’ve been in a lot of close games with a lot of top teams and finally we gave them something, and hopefully we continue with this and give them more to leave with.’
Boyce stands to be corrected: Saturday’s win wasn’t a gift to the seniors. They earned it.
