The Premiere Project, a group of Binghamton University students who put on various charity events, will hold an all-female date auction on Saturday at University Plaza in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The charity event will start with a cocktail hour at 8:30 p.m. and the date auction will begin at 9:30 p.m.

‘Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we decided to plan an all-female date auction with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society,’ said Jared Dubro, a senior majoring in psychology and a founder of the Premiere Project.

The Premiere Project, founded in October 2009, offers BU students an alternative form of nightlife where philanthropy, fundraising and hosting activities, such as wine and cheese parties and date auctions, are its main goals.

‘We were just a group of friends who had a real intention to be a philanthropic group,’ said Alex Tafet, a senior double-majoring in creative writing and cinema in the organization.

‘About a year ago ‘ we started thinking about running some kind of event that would break out of the normal routine of Greek Life parties,’ Dubro said.

The upcoming date auction is not the group’s first auction event. The Premiere Project’s first event was an all-Jewish date auction, where they put up $120 of their own money and ended up making $800. They sent all their profits to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The event was held in the University Plaza apartment where two of the founders lived, UP 3302. This week’s date auction will also be held there.

After that, the Premiere Project started advertising itself as a student-run event organization that provided students with nightlife options other than the traditional frat party, according to Tafet.

The group held another date auction whose profits went to the student-run a cappella group The Pegs. The event made over $500 and helped The Pegs work toward releasing their upcoming album.

According to Dubro, the Premiere Project then launched a website with pictures from past events, which can be seen at www.premiereproject.com/wordpress/about-us.

This week’s event is just one of many that the founders of the Premiere Project hope to put on for the University community.

The founders are focused on putting on profitable and entertaining events for students, as their website indicates: ‘If you need it, we can do it ‘ and we’ll do it better than anyone else.’
