The Bearcat softball team continued to struggle this weekend, losing both games of a doubleheader to Albany Saturday at the East Gym Field.

The first game was a battle of the bats as Albany (20-11, 5-5 AE) came away with an 8-5 victory. Freshman outfielder Nicole Kothe had three RBIs, all coming on a two-out double in the fourth inning that gave the Great Danes a 4-0 lead.

Senior Kelly Ogden then added a two-run home run to widen the gap to 7-0.

Binghamton was able to cut the deficit to four runs in the bottom of the inning, using two Albany errors to make the score 7-3. But Albany got back into the scoring column when junior Laura Gremillion singled home another run in the top of the sixth inning.

Trailing 8-3, Bearcats outfielder Sara Eppolito drove in a run, then scored on a hit by Patty Egan to cut the Albany lead to 8-5, but that’s all Binghamton could muster.

Great Danes senior pitcher Casey Halloran stole the show in the second game, scattering just three hits in a 4-2 Albany win.

She held the Bearcats to two runs while striking out 13 batters.

Albany plated three runs in the fourth inning, before Binghamton junior Meghan Quinn homered in the bottom of the inning, and Eppolito followed with a long ball of her own in the sixth, narrowing the Great Dane lead to 3-2.

But Albany scored another run to give themselves some breathing room with another run in the top of the seventh, and the Bearcats went down quietly in the seventh to end the ballgame.

Sophomore pitcher Jessica Whitaker took the loss despite not being allowed an earned run, giving up only five hits in a complete game performance.

There was another game scheduled between these two teams for Sunday, but it was canceled due to the weather conditions.

The team plays at home against Colgate today at 3 p.m. at the East Gym Complex.
