Aaron Akaberi, the Binghamton University sophomore who made headlines with his decision to stop eating to protest Sodexho’s policies, has officially put his hunger strike “on hiatus.”

Akaberi cited recent health problems as well as concerns that his message was being “misinterpreted.”

“Over the weekend, I vomited up my own bile,” he said. “People were really concerned about me. [The hunger strike] was affecting the wrong people.”

Akaberi said that the school’s involuntary withdrawal policy, which gives the University authority to remove him from his studies if health officials recommend it, is no longer an issue since he’s eating again.

“That danger has passed,” he said.

A meeting was scheduled between Akaberi and University officials for Monday morning. It was postponed for Wednesday at 2 p.m., Akaberi said.
