Valentine’s Day usually means going out to dinner or exchanging simple gifts. So, for a lot of people, there’s not much that makes it different than any other date night. Instead of doing the stereotypical thing this year, try something new. You don’t have to go cliff-diving or anything, but it might be nice to change up the routine.
1. Change the pace
Do something that the two of you rarely, or never, do. There are many museums and art galleries Downtown that could be interesting to visit. If your special someone is an art major, this may be the way to go. Or get a little physical and try going bowling or playing laser tag.
Try Skate Estate, located at 3401 Vestal Road in Vestal, or TR Events, located at 1041 Upper Front St. in Binghamton for laser tag. If you’re in the mood for bowling, check out Midway Lanes, located at 213 N. Jensen Road in Vestal.
2. Take a trip
If you’re up for a longer drive, check out Syracuse or Ithaca, or if you guys like to slope the mountains, you could go to one of the ski resorts in the area. But be prepared to drop some cash, as this option is a bit more expensive. Greek Peak is less than an hour away, located at 2000 NYS Route 392 in Cortland.
3. Enjoy the theater
Just because we’re not in New York City doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good show. And besides, it’s not like the Big Apple is that far away if you want to make the hike.
“I’d say go to a stage show,” said Abby Oakes, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. “Binghamton usually has a few, and if not, Syracuse isn’t that far away. I personally think there is nothing better than a good musical, a rose and maybe a homemade meal after.”
Cider Mill Playhouse is located at 2 S. Nanticoke Ave. in Endicott if you want to catch a play.
4. On-campus fun
If you don’t have a car, you still have options, like going to one of the dance classes that the ballroom dancing team offers. If dancing isn’t your thing, you could both sign up for a club that neither of you knows anything about, like the Pirate Club or KnitWits. Just try something crazy and different.
5. For those on a budget
If you are completely strapped for cash, go to the Susquehanna Room for a quieter atmosphere.
If you can’t afford a flashy gift, there’s a dollar store in the Town Square Mall. Get a bunch of cheap candy and pair it with a long, handwritten letter about how much you care for him or her. It may not be much, but it’s the thought that counts.
“You could tell your valentine 14 things that you like about them,” said Laura Blazej, a senior majoring in cognitive psychology.
You could also just try staying in. Turn off all the phones and computers and enjoy just being with each other. Have a movie marathon with all of your favorites or cook each other’s favorite meals.
6. Last-minute details
If you forget to pick up a gift, you could always run to the dining hall. They’ve been selling Valentine’s Day-themed candy that you can buy with your meal plan.
No matter what you decide, be sure to make your valentine feel special.
