This semester’s first big concert is set for Friday, as Tau Epsilon Phi (TEP) and the Binghamton International Travel Alliance (BITA) team up to host “Lazers Against Cancer,” an electro-house fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

The concert will feature Skerrit Bwoy, the well-known hype man and MC for popular electronic group Major Lazer, a collaborative music project from DJs/producers Diplo and Switch. This will be his first show after taking several months off to perfect his sound and style.

Connor Kinslow, philanthropy chair of TEP and one of the show’s executive producers, is excited for Skerrit Bwoy to make his new debut.

“He’s been working hard over the last few months to enhance his sound with his own live production,” Kinslow said. “We’re the first show that’s going to hear his new set and he’s excited to play his new work for us. Skerrit Bwoy said it’s going to be wild, popping and high-energy.”

TEP and BITA have also worked with more than 30 student organizations that are helping to co-host the event, including social and professional Greek Life organizations, Powerful United Ladies Striving to Elevate, Rainbow Pride Union and Binghamton Skate Movement. Binghamton Sound Stage and Lighting is also contributing to the show by supplying equipment, including strobe lights.

Michael Khan, president of BITA and also an executive producer for the show, feels that this is the perfect event to bring together Binghamton’s student body.

“With so many different groups of people there, I know people are going to make friends out of this,” Khan said. “It’s all about promoting unity on campus.”

“This is a progressive event because it’s one of the first times I can remember that Greek Life and student groups have come together to host an event,” Kinslow added. “We’re uniting a diverse demographic of students over a universal cause — cancer.”

The event will take place from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in the Mandela Room and Old Union Hall, with the Tillman Lobby serving as a rest area. Water and glow-sticks will be provided.

Opening acts DJ Mozez, DJ DRMR and DJ Woody will kick off the show, followed by a performance from Black Dance Repertoire, prompting both Kinslow and Khan to stress that the night will be a collection of diverse music and unique sounds from the electronic world, ranging from reggae to dubstep.

“If you enjoyed the Pretty Lights concert, then you’re going to have a good time here,” Kinslow said.

1,200 tickets are currently on sale online at www.BingTickets.com and hard copies can be purchased from noon to 4 p.m. until Friday in the New University Union. Advanced tickets are $9 for students and $12 for the general public, while student tickets will be $10 at the door. All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
