After a long, tiring HalloWeekend night, it is always nice to settle down and relax the next day with a good movie. To keep the spooky vibes, you probably want to pick a horror movie. With so many scary titles available on Netflix this month, it is hard to settle for just one. Here are a few titles to consider for some good, old spooks.
“Re-Animator”
Based on the H.P. Lovecraft short story titled “Herbert West-Reanimator,” this ’80s cult classic follows the story of Herbert West, a medical student that concocts a formula that can bring the dead back to life. At first, he creates nothing more than bloodthirsty and thoughtless monsters, but he becomes somewhat successful when he tests a new formula on Dr. Hill, a brain surgeon that attempted to blackmail him into handing over his research and notes. Overall, the movie treads the line between ridiculous and entertaining. If you are in the mood for a gory ’80s horror movie, then this is the right choice for you.
“V/H/S”
“V/H/S” is another great addition to the found footage subgenre, alongside movies like “The Blair Witch Project.” A small gang of men get hired by an anonymous person to break into a house and steal a VHS tape. They gladly accept, but when they break into the home, they find it to be filled with hundreds of unmarked VHS tapes. While collecting as many tapes as they can, they find a dead man sitting in a recliner in front of a TV playing white noise. The criminals split up to search the rest of the house, but one of the men stays in the room with the old man’s body and decides to play one of the tapes. The rest of the film consists of five very different, but all spooky, short stories, with clips of the gang searching the house in between.
“Would You Rather”
Everyone has played the game “would you rather,” but have you ever acted on your choices? The film follows Iris, a young lady who is caring for her sick brother and struggling to pay for his medical bills. His doctor introduces Iris to Shepard Lambrick, who offers Iris a deal: If she can win a parlor game at his dinner party, his charity will pay for her brother’s treatment and find him a donor immediately. Upon arriving at the party, Iris and the other contestants learn that they must play “would you rather,” and the things they are asked to do become increasingly disturbing with each round. They quickly realize that they are stuck there until there is only one left standing. The movie is similar to “Saw,” with people being forced into disturbing situations against their will, but it uses many other unique ideas and techniques to make it its own.
“Hush”
This film follows Madison Young, an author that lives in a cabin, as she is tormented by a masked killer. This idea has been done numerous times, but what makes “Hush” interesting is the fact that Madison is deaf. The film starts out when Madison’s friend is murdered on her porch. She slams on Madison’s windows, but Madison does not respond, causing the killer to realize she is deaf. The killer then lures Madison to the front door where he is standing on her porch. She is able to lock him out of the home and the remainder of the film follows Madison trying to outsmart this masked man. There are many moments that leave you in suspense, and make you feel like you are there with Madison. “Hush” is a great new take on a classic idea.
