Declared by Rolling Stone as their first and only female “guitar god” (and the youngest as well), Kaki King still insists she’s nothing special.
Although collaborations with musicians such as the Foo Fighters and Tegan and Sara, a Golden Globe nomination and a nearly decade-deep discography hardly constitute as such, Kaki King’s sincere humility has presented her as one of the hardest working acts in the business.
Known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, breathy vocals and use of fret-tapping and slap-base techniques, Kaki King resonates with a refreshing sense of energy and raw talent that is hard to find in the music business today.
After signing with Velour records in 2002, the Atlanta native has released five full-length albums and two EPs. Returning to her roots as a solo acoustic performer, King’s 2011 tour is her first without a backup band since 2005. Touring with a collection of seven rare instruments, her “Traveling Freak Guitar Tour” kicks off in Mexico City and concludes this Saturday at Binghamton University.
Doors will open at 7:45 p.m. in the Undergrounds and the show will start promptly at 8 p.m. with a performance by opener Sticklips. If Kaki King’s live performance is half as energetic and diverse as her musical talent, then this will be one show that you will regret not attending.
Did we mention that it’s free?
