Now that Binghamton is finally (and hopefully) over what seemed to be a permanent freezing slump, you’ve noticed some changes. You’re happier, wearing shorts and, most importantly, you’re spending more time outside. Other than the fact that you have to start actively avoiding the people you hooked up with Downtown and haven’t seen since, life is generally just better. But oh no, what kind of tunes will fit this foreign springy setting? You’re so used to curling up in your blankies and playing Fleet Foxes and Owen that you have absolutely no idea what to listen to. Fear not, Release has compiled a list of albums that are good weather-appropriate with a little something for everyone. In no particular order, here are our favorite spring albums.
“Blink-182” – Blink-182
With singles such as “Feeling This” and “Always,” Blink-182’s self-titled album is perfect for driving around on a nice day with your sunglasses on and windows down. It’s a bit hard to believe that “Blink-182” was released an entire decade ago, but one thing is for certain: almost every track is suitable for spring and summer. These three dudes knew their stuff, and even 10 years later kids like us can appreciate their musical talent.
“good kid, m.A.A.d city” – Kendrick Lamar
Since GKMC’s release back in October of 2012, I haven’t been able to contain myself with the anticipation of hearing “Swimming Pools” while frolicking around and playing in the sun. I can only hope that you share the same excitement too.
“We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank” – Modest Mouse
Best for listening to at friendly barbeques and the beach, even the title of this album alludes to the nautical. Singles like “Dashboard” helped get “We Were Dead” on the radar back in spring of 2007 and picked up even more momentum afterward. This was also the follow up album to “Good News for People Who Love Bad News,” made famous after “Float On” was released as a single off of the record. Other awesome tracks that can be found on “We Were Dead” include “Florida,” “Fire it Up” and “We’ve Got Everything.”
“Days” – Real Estate
Plainly said, this album as a whole is awesome and highly conducive to awesome weather. Hailing from New Jersey, Real Estate is a band whose sound is a mix of chill yet upbeat and indie but not overbearing. “Days” is their second studio album and features tracks such as “Out of Tune,” “It’s Real” and “Wonder Years.” Also, they’re coming to Moefest, so it’s a great time to become a fan!
“The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit’s Flower” – of Montreal
This album by of Montreal is unrecognizable in comparison to some of their other records, and for the sake of nice days above 60 degrees that’s a good thing. “The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit’s Flower” almost sounds like something from The Beach Boys and has a nostalgic feel to it, but also appeals to a younger crowd. With track titles like “The Secret Ocean,” of Montreal keeps with the theme of warmer seasons and makes this album quite an enjoyable listen.
