The last match of the season for the Binghamton University women’s tennis team ended just like the four before it.
The result is a Bearcats win.
The Bearcats defeated conference rival Albany on Saturday, 7-0, securing an undefeated conference season and the third straight sweep for the team.
“It was a good win for us,” head coach Mike Stevens said, according a Binghamton University press release.
Sophomore Lauren Bates swept the Great Dane’s Susan Ma in first singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Jillian Santos defeated rival Kim Weltman, 6-4, 6-4 in second. The dynamic duo then finished off Ma and Laine Mackey in first doubles, 8-3.
Bearcats Yagmur Gone hit a bit of a roadblock in the first set of her fifth singles against Mackey, 4-6, but came back in the second and third sets to claim the match, 7-6, 10-6, respectively.
Yulia Smirnova also had some trouble in the second set, but came back in third to win the match (6-1, 4-6, 7-5).
The Bearcats’ story this year has been all about progress. The team improved from last season’s record of 12-6 to 16-3. They beat Army 4-3, a team they had lost to last season 3-4, and swept Villanova by a score of 7-0, improving on their last win against them (5-2). Binghamton has an overall record of 108-49 in singles matches and a 39-21 doubles record.
For Stevens’ squad, all roads now lead to the America East tournament. Last year, the Bearcats were runner-up to Boston University, the reigning champs of the tournament. The Bearcats swept Hartford in the first round 4-0 and defeated UMBC 4-3 before losing to the Terriers, 2-4.
The conference brackets will be announced tomorrow.
