Binghamton University’s men’s tennis team continued its tournament play this weekend in central New Jersey for the Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational. The Bearcats sent a partial line-up to the three-day tournament.
“My job [is] to make sure that everyone plays four or five events in the fall,” Bearcats head coach Adam Cohen said regarding the line-up. “I have to manage how much they play; the guys can’t play more than five events.”
Junior Evan Algier and senior Moshe Levy played together as Binghamton’s lone representatives in the “A” doubles event. The team was defeated by Cornell’s duo of juniors Andy Gauthier and Jeremy Feldman, 8-3. Winning the “B” singles, Gauthier had an impressive tournament.
Moshe Levy, one of the more active Bearcats during this weekend, also played in the “A” singles flight. Yale’s Connor Dawson defeated Levy 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the opening round. Levy was scheduled to play Jeremy Feldman of Cornell in a consolation match, but retired due to injury.
“Moshe played okay; he lost a close match 7-6 in the third,” Cohen said on the three-set loss. “He couldn’t win the big points at the end.”
Last weekend’s surprise story, Evan Algier, represented the Bearcats in the “C” singles, but could not overcome strong play by one of Princeton’s standout freshmen, Matt Spindler. He lost his opening match, 7-5, 6-4, and later dropped his consolation match, 6-3, 6- 0.
“Evan played a top recruit from Princeton,” Cohen said. “[Spindler] beat the top seed right after he beat Evan.”
In the “B” doubles bracket, Binghamton’s Andreas Danielsson and Rafael Rodrigues were defeated in the first round by Penn State’s Guillaume St-Maurice and Taylor Cohen 8-3. Penn State’s duo advanced to the “B” finals before losing to a pair of underclassmen from Princeton, Yohei Shoji and Matt Siow.
Rodrigues was one of the few bright spots this weekend. Rodrigues beat Cornell’s Mizra Klis 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Columbia’s Nathaniel Gery 6-1, 6-3 in the “D” singles bracket.
Rodrigues went on to defeat Princeton’s Michael Lin 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation round before losing to Penn State’s Guanhua Chen. Rodrigues was the only Bearcat to win two matches this weekend.
“We need to come back and keep working,” Cohen said. “It wasn’t the weekend we wanted to have. The guys know that and they know we need to get back here and work for our next event.”
The Bearcats are next scheduled to play at the USTA National Tennis Center Invitational on Sept. 25 to 27.
