The track team had a sun-filled holiday break at their meet at the Florida Relays. The most noteworthy Bearcat performance belonged to sophomore sprinter Kim Williams. Williams, who already holds the school record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.17 seconds, ran a 56.39 in the 400-meter dash, breaking the eight-year-old school record for that event.

‘If [Williams] can maintain her focus, she will do very well,’ said head coach Mike Thompson.

The other notable performance belonged to senior pole-vaulter Rory Quiller. Quiller placed second at the meet with a jump of 16-6 3/4. This jump, although a qualifier for the regional meet, is much lower than what Quiller was jumping at the end of the winter season.

‘He made that height by more than two feet,’ Thompson said. ‘He had two very good jumps at 17 feet, one where he nicked the bar on the way up, and one where he hit it on the way down. He jumped very well. He was clearly the best jumper there. I’m not concerned, he’s looking very good.’

There were no other outstanding performances at the meet, but that was not a concern for Thompson either; the bigger test awaits this weekend at the Virginia Onesty Invitational.

‘The meet at Virginia this weekend will tell us how good we will be this season,’ Thompson said.
