After playing neck to neck with the Philadelphia Phantoms to end the third period in a 2-2 tie, the Binghamton Senators received their second overtime loss of the season Sunday night.

Phantoms right winger Brent Kelly scored the game-winning goal 1:54 into the sudden death period.

All four goals in regulation were scored in the second period. The Senators got on the board at the 9:54 mark on a goal by center Steve Martins, but the Phantoms’ Pat Kavanagh knotted the game at one, 20 seconds later.

Sentators’ right wing Gregg Johnson scored the next goal at 12:29, but the Phantoms would answer again five minutes later.

The Senators began with a slow start in the first period, as they were outshot 14-4.

“For as big a game as it was, for some reason our legs and our minds weren’t in it,” Martins said. “Luckily though, we got out of the first period OK.”

Both teams failed to score on eight power-play opportunities even though the B-Sens were ranked 26th in the American Hockey League in penalty-killing proficiency before the game.

Martins accounts the recent success against the power-play to improved stick work on the ice.

“[Head coach Dave Cameron] has been a big one for the use of video to show us what we’re doing right and what we’re not doing,” he said. “And, when you come down to it, much of it is the goal player.”

Kelly Guard played in goal for Sunday night’s entire game, and stopped 38 of 41 total shots.

With just 15 points on the season, the Senators are in last place in the East Division, and 12th overall in the conference.

The team will head to Norfolk tomorrow for a road game against the Admirals, and will return home on Dec. 9 to host the Hershey Bears.
