Three student groups who lost their fund-raised money are back in the black after a resolution returning their money was approved by the Student Assembly.

A combined $7,500 was put into the Student Association’s Retained Earnings Account after the Harpur Harpeggios, Binghamton Crosbys and Binghamton Students for Students International failed to roll over their funds properly. The groups have been asking the SA to return the money since last semester, but the financial vice president, Richard Marmolejos, had declined to return the entirety of the lost funds.

A resolution presented on Feb. 5 demanded that the money be returned in order to create ‘a process guaranteeing fairness in the situation of negligent outgoing executive board members.’ The resolution passed, returning a combined $3,000 ‘ $2,500 and $500 respectively ‘ to the Pegs and the Crosbys, both a cappella groups.

BSSI, who raises money to send children in under-developed nations to college, lost $4,500 because they decided to change the charity they worked with and didn’t dedicate the funds before the end of the semester.

‘We’re going to make good on their promise and donate the money to a charity of their choice, in BSSI’s name,’ said Chris Powell, vice chair of the Financial Council.

Powell, who will be running for financial vice president, said he was against the resolution because it isn’t a good precedent for the Student Assembly to erase of the mistakes of groups.

‘The system could be improved,’ he said, ‘but it’s not broken.’

Erica Meyer, the Pegs’ treasurer, said that she was grateful for the decision that she and the group had been seeking all year. The Pegs will be using the funds to produce a CD at the end of the year ‘ the first put out in seven years.
