Binghamton University will host the No. 2 wrestling team in the nation, the Iowa State Cyclones, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Sprawl and Brawl Wrestling Duals in the West Gym.
The Cyclones are the highest nationally-ranked team ever to come to Binghamton.
‘They might be the best team in the country,’ said BU head coach Pat Popolizio.
The Cyclones, who were NCAA runner-ups last year, feature a lineup with seven nationally-ranked wrestlers, including 184-pounder Jake Varner. Varner is ranked first in the nation and was a national finalist last year.
For the first time at the Division I level, the Bearcats lineup will have two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Senior Kyle Fried (149 pounds) and sophomore Josh Patterson (174 pounds) are both ranked No. 20 in the nation.
Fried will face Iowa State’s 149-pound Mitch Mueller, ranked No. 15 in the nation.
Iowa State is coached by Cael Sanderson, the former Cyclones star who is the only four-time undefeated national champion. Sanderson also won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
The ‘Sprawl’ begins at 9:30 a.m. with Iowa State taking on Clarion at Mat 1 and West Virginia grappling with Sacred Heart on Mat 2. While Iowa State and Binghamton square off on Mat 1 at 11:30 a.m., Sacred Heart will take on Clarion. The day ends with a 1:15 p.m. match between the Hawkeyes and West Virginia.
