A change to the New York State Education Law will make entire student groups accountable for breaching the University’s code of conduct.

Section 129a of the law changed last year, but BU is now changing its registration policy for student groups. Soon, student groups will have to include the University’s code of conduct in their constitutions.

This policy will even extend to greek life. If a fraternity is found to be serving alcohol to minors, the entire fraternity could face charges from the University’s judicial board.

According to Dave Belsky, the executive vice president of the Student Association, the registration process for student groups will be changing to sync with the administration’s interpretation of the law. He said he has been working with the administration on the issue, particularly on who would be liable for adherence of student groups to the code of conduct.

“Other SUNYs are interpreting the law to mean that any breaches of the code of conduct can bring judicial charges against the elected leaders of the group,” Belsky said. “Binghamton originally was going to follow suit.” Now, he said, the University will be holding the entire group accountable.
