So dreams of a Subway Series faded away this weekend, but don’t let Alex Rodriguez and his overpaid, underachieving teammates get you down. Even if the Yankees won’t win a title, several Bearcat teams look primed to win some titles of their own.
The defending America East champion volleyball team won twice this weekend, continuing its undefeated conference season. The men’s soccer team also has title aspirations and has fallen just once in conference play. And one of Binghamton University’s best team programs is just getting started: the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams started play this past weekend, and if recent history is any indication, they should have very successful seasons.
Pipe Dream’s Golden Pipe Award: While her senior teammates continue to break records, sophomore tennis player Juliana Umeki has quietly remained the team’s rock, consistently keeping the team steady. Against the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Siena Saints, Umeki, playing second singles, fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win both the set and the match 7-6, 6-3.
