The Binghamton Senators showed this weekend that every second really does count. With just one second left in regulation Sunday against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, defenseman Jan Platil scored the tying goal in what had previously seemed an imminent loss for the B-Sens, pushing the game into sudden death overtime. Denis Hamel chalked up his 51st goal of the season 1:07 later, and the Senators escaped with the 4-3 win.

Binghamton came out strong against the Tigers before falling behind in the second period. Charlie Stephens scored the first goal of the game 3:30 into the first period, followed 13 seconds later with a goal by Grant Potulny.

But the team’s characteristic mid-game slump began after a power-play goal by Bridgeport’s Peter Tsimikalis 18:58 into the first period. The Tigers struck again 16 seconds later, followed by another power-play goal 3:16 into the second. The Senators were hindered by shorthanded play the entire game due to 26 penalty minutes — more than twice the amount the Tigers racked up — even though they were able to come away with the come-from-behind victory.

Friday night brought another exciting win for the Senators — a 2-0 shutout against their top-ranked East Division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Platil gave Binghamton the lead 57 seconds into the second period, but the Penguins threatened to even the score in the third after Lance Ward and Danny Bois were benched due to minor penalties. The Senators held their ground despite the five-on-three disadvantage, and Hamel scored the final goal of the game into an empty net with 32 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Senators’ six-game home winning streak was snapped Saturday night in a contest against the Norfolk Admirals. Hamel scored the B-Sens’ lone goal of the game at 13:37 into the first period, while Norfolk scored twice in the second en route to a 3-1 win.

Binghamton travels to Scranton Wednesday to play the Penguins, before returning to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena to host Bridgeport Friday and Rochester Saturday.
