The Binghamton Senators ended their weekend on a bittersweet note, as they followed a win Saturday night with a loss on Sunday.
On Sunday, Manchester scored its third goal of the night with 42 seconds left in the game, giving the Monarchs the 3-1 victory. Earlier in the third period, right-winger Brandon Bochenski cut the Monarchs’ lead to one with a power-play goal, but the B-Sens were unable to tie up the score.
Denis Grebeshkov scored Manchester’s first goal of the night at 5:22 into the game, capitalizing on a power play while Senator Brad Norton was in the box for an elbowing call. Konstantin Pushkarev scored at 16:41 in the second to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead, while Connor James scored the game-clincher in the third. Goalie Kelly Guard and defenseman Filip Novak were credited with assists on Binghamton’s only goal of the night.
The Senators fared much better in Syracuse Saturday night, where they erased a three-goal lead. Guard made 36 saves in the 4-2 win, marking the first time Binghamton defeated the Crunch in more than three months and evening up the season series at 3-3.
Lance Ward kicked off the Senators’ streak 7:44 into the game after scoring off an assist from Steve Martins. Denis Hamel followed at 10:43 with assists from Jeff Heerema and Tomas Malec. Binghamton’s two goals on nine shots prompted a goalie change, as Syracuse starter Mike Ayers was replaced with Andrew Penner. That didn’t stop Charlie Stephens however, who scored less than eight minutes later during four-on-four play, on a pass by Filip Novak.
Syracuse scored its first goal at 12:41 into the second on a power play while Novak was in the box for tripping. Bochenski responded with a power-play goal of his own with nine seconds left in the second to reestablish the B-Sens’ three-goal lead.
The final goal of the night was scored by Syracuse at 3:32 into the third, 10 seconds into a Binghamton penalty kill after a goaltender interference call. Bochenski sat for Guard’s penalty.
Both teams went 2-for-7 in power-play opportunities. Guard picked up his 15th win of the season, while Hamel’s 38th goal boosted him to ninth in the league ranking of top scorers. The Senators remain in 11th place in the Eastern Conference.
Binghamton faces the Norfolk Admirals this Wednesday at the Broome County Arena, and will travel to Manchester this Friday for another shot at the Monarchs.
