Maybe the Bearcats can petition the league to let them play all their games at the Events Center.

The Binghamton University women’s basketball team fell at New Hampshire last night 55-49, dropping its road record to 3-7 on the season.

The UNH defense proved too strong for the Bearcats, who trailed by one at halftime, but were unable to get anything going in the second half against a stingy Wildcats’ 2-3 zone.

“It was the same old story on the road for us,” said head Coach Rich Conover. “The wheels kind of fell off and New Hampshire got us.”

After opening the game leading 14-2, BU committed too many turnovers and couldn’t get much done offensively.

“They played a 2-3 defense and it stopped us,” Conover said. “We definitely have to be more aggressive against the zone.”

Senior forward Rachel Laws returned to action for the first time in six games, playing 14 minutes off the bench and shooting 2-for-2 from the field. Conover said that he wanted her to get some game action in, but her ankle is not at 100 percent yet.

Sophomore forward Laura Sario led the Bearcats with 11 points, while sophomore forward Juta Jahilo added nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

The Bearcats’ fate wasn’t helped by their inability to get to the free-throw line or protect the basketball. They attempted just eight free throws the entire game and committed 18 turnovers.

“You can’t score 49 on the road and expect to win,” Conover said. “It’s easier to get out of these ruts at home, but it’s a lot harder on the road.”

The loss dropped the Bearcats to third place in the America East, thanks to Stony Brook’s victory over Vermont.

The Bearcats will look to end their road woes tomorrow afternoon when they head to Long Island for a huge matchup with the second place Stony Brook Seawolves.
