In her last home game in a Bearcats uniform, senior forward Danielle White punctuated her career in dominant fashion as Binghamton defeated the UMBC Retrievers, 3-1, Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
‘This was a must win. We treated this match as a playoff game,’ said Binghamton head coach Jeff Leightman.
On Senior Recognition Night, where all of the senior players were honored before kickoff, the Bearcats faithfully paid tribute to eight seniors who were all playing in their last home games. Recognized were backfielders Christina Butler, Lorin Weidman, Erica Eddy and Katie Kerrigan, midfielders Kerry O’Shaughnessy and Tricia Reed, and forwards Kim Povill and White.
White had a hand (or lack, thereof; remember, you can’t use your hands in soccer) in all three Binghamton goals, scoring two herself and adding an assist on Kerrigan’s first half goal. White now has six goals for the season, which is third in the America East. She and Povill are tied for the team lead in points with 15.
Both teams began the game very slowly, with neither team gaining the clear advantage. At 10:33 Kerrigan got things going, heading in a corner kick from White that deflected off a defender and past Retriever keeper Christine Bacinski. It was Kerrigan’s second goal of the season.
‘We came out slow, but scoring the first goal gave us life,’ Leightman said.
About 2 1/2 minutes into the second half, White took a pass from Povill and put it past a diving Bacinski. A little over seven minutes later, White scored again on another assist from Povill. Povill finished the game with seven shots, while White had three.
After giving up the three goals and making four saves, Bacinski was replaced by junior goalie Catie Bukowski. Bukowski finished with two saves.
‘We bring a great commitment level to the game,’ Leightman said. ‘We play a good brand of soccer.’
UMBC (2-13-2, AE 2-4-1) broke up the shutout at 65:30 when freshman Morgan Warrington took a feed from Michelle Worrest and beat Binghamton goalkeeper Jen McEachron. McEachron finished a strong game with four saves on eight shots.
