The Binghamton University softball team got contributions from upperclassmen and freshmen alike to gain its first America East win over the weekend as the Bearcats battled to a 1-2 record in a series against the Vermont Catamounts.

The Bearcats (5-23, 1-8 AE) began the series on Saturday with a 10-9 victory sparked by seniors Sara Eppolito and Meghan Quinn and freshman Bri Andrews.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Andrews hit an RBI double that scored Sandy Meadows. Andrews later advanced to third, and later scored on two wild pitches to put the Bearcats ahead 2-1.

Vermont answered with a five-run second inning that included a two-run double by senior Kate Haber and a two-run home run by junior Jeanine Connolly that made the score 6-2.

Quinn then led off the bottom of the second with a long home run to center field. She finished the series hitting .444, and scoring three runs.

“I’m just trying to have the best season of my career,” Quinn said.

The big inning for Binghamton proved to be in the fourth, when the team drove in five runs off of Vermont pitcher Aimee Kern. Eppolito hit a two-run single and later scored on Andrews’ two-run double down the left field line that made the score 8-8. Andrews finished the weekend with four RBIs and has now hit safely in six of the last seven games.

“Lately I have been fortunate enough to get some strong hits in the game,” Andrews said. “I attribute that to discipline at the plate which I have been working at and getting a little bit better as the season has progressed.”

After exchanging a pair of runs to make the score 9-9, Quinn came to the plate with one out in the seventh inning and drove a Jocelyn Abaray offering to right center for a double. Freshman Kelly Schuldt followed with a single to right that scored Quinn to seal a 10-9 win for the Bearcats.

The second game of the doubleheader ended in disappointment for the Bearcats as Vermont took advantage of a seven-run fourth inning to win the game 8-4. Haber led the way for the Catamounts, hitting a two-run triple in the inning. Haber finished the three game series with six hits and seven RBIs.

Junior Michelle Olivieri went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs in the game for Binghamton. She finished the series 4-for-7, with three RBIs.

The final game of the series, played on Sunday, did not end on a good note for Binghamton. The Bearcats appeared to be in control, scoring four runs in the second inning, first on an RBI single by Olivieri, and then a huge three-run homer by Eppolito. The senior designated player finished the series with five RBIs.

However, after tying the game at four heading into the fifth inning, the Catamounts tacked on nine runs to make the final score 13-4. Junior second baseman Haley Crosby led the way with a two-run double. Kern, (playing first base in this game) and freshman outfielder Laura Stagliano added two-run singles in the inning.

“On the field everyone is giving it 100 percent defending against these great hitting teams,” Andrews said. “Now we just have to pick up our offense and get a string of hits together. Once we do that we will be right there in every game.”

Next up for the Bearcats is a doubleheader Tuesday at Albany, who they are looking to avenge an 11-3 loss with on March 29. The Great Danes (20-11, 8-1 AE) have won nine of their last 10 games, and boast America East Player of the Week Meagan Butsch. Butsch is second on the team with a .356 average on the season and leads the team with 13 extra-base hits, including four home runs, 18 runs and 18 RBIs.
