After this past weekend’s Slippery Rock Open, the Binghamton wrestling team looks like more than just a bunch of freshmen.

“I thought the team performed well,” said head coach Tony Robie. “We won a lot of close matches, and they definitely exceeded my expectations going in.”

The top two performers for the Bearcats were freshman co-captain Chris Wade, who placed second in the 157 pound weight class, and freshman heavyweight Ed Bordas, who finished fourth after losing two tough double overtime matches.

“Going in I didn’t expect to come in second,” Wade said. “I knew I could do well, it was just a matter of how well.”

The Bearcats had three others in the placing round. Freshmen Steve Gurien went 4-1 at 125 pounds, Nate Patterson was 4-1 at 149 pounds and co-captain Kevin Owen went 5-2 at 174 pounds.

“I thought the rest of the team did good considering it was our first tournament,” Wade said.

The Bearcats compete next on Sunday against James Madison.
